Integration
Claude Code + GitHub
GitHub's official MCP gives Claude Code access to issues, pull requests, repos and code search, so the agent works with the remote repository and not just your local files.
Updated 2026-07-27
What you can do
| Action | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Create and update issues | Turn findings into tasks without leaving the terminal. |
| Review pull requests | Read the diff, comment and summarize what changed. |
| Search code | Find patterns in public repos or your own without cloning them. |
| Read remote files | Look at someone else's repo as a reference. |
| Check Actions | See the status of CI workflows. |
How to connect it
- 01Create a Personal Access Token in GitHub with the minimum permissions you need.
- 02Add GitHub's official MCP server to your client following its documentation.
- 03Pass the token as an environment variable of the server, never in the prompt.
- 04Restart and check with a read query, for example listing open issues.
Agency use case
Turn a review into real tasks
- 1.The agent reviews the diff of a pull request.
- 2.You ask it to open an issue for each confirmed finding.
- 3.The MCP creates the issues with title, context and affected file.
- 4.The team works on concrete tasks instead of one long comment.
What you will trip over
- Give the token the minimum permissions. A token with full access is an unnecessary risk.
- If you work in client repos, confirm which one the agent is acting on before it writes.
- The agent already reads your local files: the MCP adds the remote side, it does not replace it.

Frequently asked questions
Can it commit and push for me?+
For your local repo, Claude Code uses git directly. The MCP is mainly for what lives on GitHub: issues, PRs, search and Actions.
