Summary
OpenAI introduced Presence, an enterprise product designed to run voice and chat agents in internal workflows and customer service. The platform combines model reasoning with corporate policies, operating procedures, permissions, approved actions, escalation rules, simulations, evaluations and an improvement loop driven by Codex.
Presence is available through a limited program for eligible enterprise customers and is not yet a self-serve product. OpenAI says the system already runs its English-language phone support channel and resolves 75% of incoming cases without human intervention. It also says its improvement process cut handoffs to humans by 15 percentage points over ten days.
Why it matters
The launch confirms that the competitive edge in AI agents is moving from the standalone model to operational governance. Companies need to know what an agent can do, which systems it can touch, when it needs authorization and how its behavior is audited after launch.
For agencies, integrators and consultants, this opens opportunities in process design, system connections, knowledge base preparation, evaluation, guardrails and ongoing maintenance.
Practical implications
- Agent projects will need to be sold as governed operational systems, not simple chatbots.
- Documentation of policies, SOPs, permissions and escalation becomes a core part of the product.
- Selected integrators could become an important channel for implementing Presence.
What to watch
- When a self-serve version will arrive.
- Which integrators will get access.
- The pricing model and minimum implementation requirements.
- Availability for mid-size and small companies.
